The air is thin here and will be thinner the higher I go. To acclimate I came to Denver yesterday. 15 1/2 hours from Aitkin. Trip was great except for the Nebraska part. Just a touch flat. The Platt river runs alongside quite a while and was a great resource for the covered wagon folk. What I traveled in one day would take them a year or two.
Denver is at about 5300’ (mile high), and Jon, uncle Ric, Cheryl’s brother, and I hiked from about 5700’ to 7000’, 3 miles up, 3 back. I could feel the air loss but not bad. Tomorrow Jon and I plan on going up to about 10K’ for a jaunt. Should break me a bit but help me acclimate. Friday I will start at 5500’ and will break 10K’ late the third day.
Not Bad
Today went well and was fun with Ric, Jon, and Svea the wonder dog. I am worried about how hard it will be to hike up hill above 10K and up over 13K’, with a full pack. I guess I will find out but the unknown is worry some. Svea is a great hiker and walks well on a waist leash. Very popular with other trail folk to. She is a 10 month old Mini Australian Shepard.
Looks like you have great company on your acclimation trip! Keep it up Scott! We are rooting for you!
